  • The main kind of food New Englanders contributed to the economy was fish.
  • The Middle Colonies grew wheat, barley, oats, rye, and corn. The Middle Colonies were often called the "breadbasket" because they grew so much fexternal image wheat.gifood. Wheat could be ground to make flour, and both wheat and flour could be sold in other colonies or in Europe.
  • The Southern Colonies grew several things. The most popular crop was tobacco. The two southernmost states (South Carolina and Georgia) also grew indigo and rice.

Main Explorers/ Leaders and their Journey


7. Christopher Newport was an explorer who was known for founding the first permanent Englished settlement of the United States, or what was then called the New World. This colony was known as Jamestown, and was founded on May 14, 1607. Read the article to find out: What was Jamestown named after? Why did the King of England send him to the New World? What present day state would Christopher Newport be responsible for building the history of?

This will help you learn more about this leader and explorer of the colony Jamestown. Even though Hudson didn't find the Orient, what good was this region know for as the best in North America? In a brief timeline of the colonization of the New World consider the following; Hudson's voyage came years before the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock and years after Jamestown colony was established 60 miles south of the entrance to Chesapeake Bay.
